History: Mannesmann Tally, Genicom and Printronix
Mannesmann Tally and Genicom: Tally AG was founded in 1948 by Philip Renshaw, focusing on design, development, manufacturing, distribution and servicing of printers for high-volume industrial and business applications. Tally was a key innovator in line matrix and industrial inkjet technologies and had become a player in the color laser market. Headquartered in Ulm, Germany, Tally’s American operations had been based in Kent, Wash. In 1979 Tally and Mannesmann Präzisiontechnik were merged to form Mannesmann Tally, part of the Mannesmann Kienzle computer group. Mannesmann Tally offered printing solutions in all major technologies into all key markets, along with service and support. In 1996 Tally was reformed as part of a management buyout from Mannesmann, backed by Legal & General Ventures. World headquarters was in Elchingen, Germany with subsidiaries and business partners in more than 130 countries. Production continued in Elchingen for serial dot matrix and professional inkjet printers, and in Kent for line printers and color development.
In 1982, GE sold their printer and relays groups and the GENICOM Corporation was formed in 1983. The 1987 purchase of the printer business assets of Centronics added the 350 series dot matrix printers and the LineWriter series of band printers to their product line. From 1982 to 2003, GENICOM was a leading American manufacturer of computer printers, based in Chantilly, Virginia. The company designed and marketed a wide range of high-performance laser, serial and line matrix printers that it offered with a complementary line of consumables, parts and services.
TallyGenicom was formed on August 7, 2003 with the merger of Tally and GENICOM. Tally purchased Genicom to improve efficiencies and expand product lines. The merger gave them a greater breadth of product line.
